چکیده

[1] The detailed atomic structures of shock compressed basaltic glasses are not well understood. Here, we explore the structures of shock compressed silicate glass with a diopside–anorthite eutectic composition (Di64An36), a common Fe-free model basaltic composition, using oxygen K-edge X-ray Raman scattering and highresolution Al solid-state NMR spectroscopy and report previously unknown details of shock-induced changes in the atomic configurations. A topologically driven densification of the Di64An36 glass is indicated by the increase in oxygen K-edge energy for the glass upon shock compression. The first experimental evidence of the increase in the fraction of highly coordinated Al in shock compressed glass is found in the Al NMR spectra. This unambiguous evidence of shock-induced changes in Al coordination environments provides atomistic insights into shock compression in basaltic glasses and allows us to microscopically constrain the magnitude of impact events or relevant processes involving natural basalts on Earth and planetary surfaces. Recent interest in optimizing composition and synthesis conditions of functional crystals, and the further exploration of new possible candidates for tunable solid-state lasers, has led to significant research on compounds in this family MIMIII(MVIO₄)₂ (MI = alkali metal, MIII = Al, In, Sc, Fe, Bi, lanthanide; MVI = Mo, W). The vibrational modes, structure transformation, and Al coordination of...

Studies of phenomena such as charge, orbital and spin ordering in manganite has attracted much interest in recent years. These studies have been possible from an experimental point of view by the third generation synchrotron sources. X-ray with high flux density, tunable energy and polarization can be produced in synchrotron sources. Experiments have shown a resonant in peak intensity originat...

Mixed Network Former Effect in Ion-Conducting Alkali Borophosphate Glasses: Structure/Property Correlations in the System [M2O]1/3[(B2O3)x(P2O5)1â•fix]2/3 (M = Li, K, Cs)

Glasses in the system [M2O]1/3[(B2O3)x(P2O5)1–x]2/3(M = Li, K, Cs) (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) were prepared by standard melt-quenching procedures, and their physical properties were characterized by thermal analysis, density measurements, and impedance spectroscopy. Their atomic level structures were comprehensively characterized by Raman spectroscopy, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and by 11B...

Characterization of Altered and Minimally Altered Basaltic Glasses Using Visible-thermal Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, and Raman Spectroscopy

Introduction: The exploration of the Martian surface by the rovers Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity has indicated the widespread presence of clastic rocks of basaltic composition [1-3], many of which have altered to various extents. In this investigation, we have examined basaltic ash and tephra formed through hy-drovolcanism (the explosive interaction of magma with liquid water), glaciovolca...

Isotope effects in liquid water probed by transmission mode x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the oxygen K-edge.

The effects of isotope substitution in liquid water are probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O K-edge as measured in transmission mode. Confirming earlier x-ray Raman scattering experiments, the D2O spectrum is found to be blue shifted with respect to H2O, and the D2O spectrum to be less broadened. Following the earlier interpretations of UV and x-ray Raman spectra, the shift is relat...
